Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs), commonly known as cherry pickers, are widely used for safe access when working at height. They are essential for maintenance, construction, inspection, and installation tasks where ladders or scaffolding are not suitable. However, working at height introduces significant risks, including falls, tip-overs, collisions, and environmental hazards.
This course provides both theoretical knowledge and practical awareness required for the safe operation of MEWPs. Participants will learn how to identify different types of MEWPs, understand their applications, and select the correct machine based on the task and working environment.
The training focuses on safe operation principles, including platform safety, load limits, stability, ground assessment, and correct use of controls. It also covers pre-use inspections, functional testing, and the importance of equipment maintenance. Legal requirements such as PUWER and LOLER are introduced to ensure compliance and responsible use of lifting equipment.
In addition, the course addresses hazard awareness, including working near power lines, environmental conditions, pedestrian safety, and site planning. Emergency procedures and rescue planning are also covered to ensure participants can respond safely and effectively in critical situations.
The objective is not only to operate a MEWP, but to do so with full control, awareness, and responsibility when working at height.
After completing this course, participants will be able to:
